Robin Mullis has lived in the Chapel Hill-Carrboro area since 1980 when she moved from Charlotte to attend UNC Chapel Hill. After meeting her husband at UNC, they moved to Carrboro where they raised two wonderful daughters and just recently welcomed a grandson in 2023! Since her husband passed away from a brief battle with cancer three years ago, she has continued to anchor herself in her faith and in service to the community–not only volunteering with PORCH but also with Orange County Habitat for Humanity.

Volunteer Highlight: Robin Mullis
How did you hear about PORCH and when did you start volunteering with us?
I heard about PORCH about 12 years ago, when my neighborhood became a part of the monthly collection and I started volunteering at PORCH on February 13, 2025 as part of a group data entry project!
What is your favorite part about volunteering with PORCH?
Knowing that I, along with all the other volunteers, contribute to the success/impact of PORCH in the community.
Is there a role at PORCH that you’re an absolute pro at?
I would say I’m a pro at arranging bananas in clusters of six in the produce bins and stacking the individual bananas! But seriously, I enjoy doing whatever is needed and really love volunteering during the market.
How does volunteering in general fit into your life?
Meeting and getting to know other volunteers as well as the staff has been a delight. The following quote from Michael Curry, Retired Bishop of the Episcopal Church, describes why I volunteer.
“Mobilized love is what happens when care stops being a concept and starts becoming practice—organized, embodied, and directed toward real people in real need. Mobilized love doesn’t require optimism. It doesn’t wait until the world makes sense again. It doesn’t wait until we feel any better. It simply asks: ‘What can be done, here, now, by me?’”
