Shortly after moving to Chapel Hill from Pennsylvania, the Bridges family began volunteering with PORCH. First with mom Elizabeth and older brother Liam, now Elizabeth and younger brother and East Chapel Hill High School student Michael are fixtures at the PORCH Community Hub. Outside of their other hobbies (including cheering on the Philadelphia Eagles–go birds!–and our Tar Heels) the duo enjoy spending time together while serving their community.

Volunteer Highlight: Michael and Elizabeth Bridges
When did you start volunteering with PORCH?
Elizabeth started volunteering with PORCH in 2020 with Michael’s older brother, Liam, and Michael joined the team this past year.
How did you hear about PORCH?
Elizabeth and Michael’s brother, Liam, were involved in food distributions through the Town of Chapel Hill during the COVID lockdown where they heard about PORCH.
What is your favorite part about volunteering with PORCH?
Both Elizabeth and Michael agree that it feels good to do something positive for our community when the troubles of the world feel so big. We all need a little help sometimes, and our community is stronger when we all contribute in some small way.
Is there a role at PORCH that either of you are absolute pros at?
Michael is a pro sorter/stocker. He enjoys that it’s a hands-on role and gives him an opportunity to meet other PORCH volunteers. Elizabeth enjoys being a market runner and seeing the market in action, bustling with people, fresh produce, and good vibes!
How does volunteering in general fit into your life?
Elizabeth and Michael enjoy volunteering at the PORCH Community Hub so they can spend quality time together, and serving as Neighborhood Coordinators lets them meet more of their neighbors in Meadowmont!
