Originally from St. Louis, Matt Turnure moved to the area in 2022 to work on his PhD in Epidemiology at UNC where he researches how to better support the health of people facing addiction and mental health conditions. When he’s not hard at work in his program or volunteering with us, you can catch Matt playing guitar and ukulele, painting watercolors, baking through Carolina North Forest, or exploring hiking trails with his partner and dog.

When did you start volunteering with PORCH and how did you hear about us?

I first volunteered with PORCH in early 2024. I searched online for local volunteer opportunities and was lucky enough to find PORCH!

What is your favorite part about volunteering with PORCH?

I enjoy meeting the staff and the volunteers who make PORCH run every day. It’s easy to connect to PORCH’s mission when I’m at the Hub, working alongside like-minded folks and feeding off of the group’s energy. I also enjoy volunteering on market days and seeing families shop for what they need.

Is there a role at PORCH that you’re an absolute pro at?

I’m pretty accomplished as a Mover! It’s maybe not the most glamorous job, but rewarding all the same. Seeing the inventory at the back stock location swell during the holidays really showed how this community is committed to fighting hunger and food insecurity. Plus, a quick movers shift often means I get pulled to help out with other volunteer tasks, which is always interesting.

How does volunteering in general fit into your life—is it something you do for fun, to build skills, to meet new people, etc?

All of the above! Through volunteering I get to meet interesting people, learn what’s happening in the community, and pitch in to help out my neighbors. It helps me remember that good things are happening in the world and it’s because people get together and make it happen.
