Frequently Asked Questions
Do you have a minimum age requirement for volunteers?
Yes! Each of our volunteer event sign-ups states the minimum age to volunteer for that specific shift. You can also find this information by scrolling to our ‘Volunteer Shift Description’ graphic below. We are flexible and would love to talk through your unique situation if you feel your younger child can handle big responsibilities.
Do you sign off on service hours?
Absolutely! We have our own service hour forms we can fill out and return to you at the end of your shift. If you need a specific form filled out please provide that form to staff at the beginning of your shift.
Do you have an attendance policy?
PORCH Chapel Hill-Carrboro has a three-strike attendance policy: if you cancel within 24 hours of your shift without emailing us or do not show up for your volunteer shift three times you will have to touch base with a PORCH staff member before signing up to volunteer again.
Do I need special training ahead of volunteering with PORCH?
No, we will provide training and orientation to you at the beginning of each shift!
Can I volunteer as part of a group (e.g. club, business, scout troop)?
Yes—we welcome volunteer groups! We hold a “teen” and “elementary-age” family volunteer shift each month as well as shifts designed for groups of adults. You can reach out to chc@porchcommunities.org to hear about upcoming opportunities and to reserve your group’s spot.
What if I need to cancel or reschedule?
We totally understand—just let us know as soon as possible. You can cancel through our volunteer signup system, POINT, or email the person listed on your event confirmation email to let us know you can’t make it.
