Meet Food for Schools Sponsor Fitness Together Chapel Hill

Community Partners

Located in Meadowmont, Fitness Together Chapel Hill was founded 16 years ago by Brian Kennedy and Jeremy Bailey. The team empowers clients to take back their health so that they can have the energy to do what they love. Experienced personal trainers create custom programming for goals around weight loss, weight management, building muscle, and recovering from injury.

The business is a proud Food for Schools (FFS) sponsor. “We believe without your health, nothing else matters,” says Jeremy. “And we share a vision with PORCH that everyone in our community should have access to enough fresh food to be able to lead an active, healthy life. Prior to partnering with PORCH, we’ve had multiple clients who serve as teachers and administrators in the local school systems share gut-wrenching stories of kids that likely received their only food of the day from these school food programs, so it was an easy choice to specifically support PORCH’s Food for Schools Program.”

FFS provides supplemental food to students in Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools who are hungry and struggling to concentrate. Through FFS, PORCH Chapel Hill-Carrboro provides each school with $1,100 worth of snacks in a school year – $550 at the beginning of the academic year and $550 after the holidays. The snacks – cheese crackers, granola bars, applesauce, apples, protein bars, trail mix, fruit bars, and more – are purchased in bulk, brought to a central location, and sorted. Then, school social workers pick up the healthy snacks on a designated day each semester.

Once the social workers divide the snacks among grade levels within their school, students simply let their teacher know when they are hungry and would like a snack to tide them over during the school day. Each school nurse gets a supply of snacks, too – a vital resource when students aren’t feeling well and need some sustenance.

“The importance of giving back to and supporting our local communities and beyond was instilled in us by our families at a young age,” says Jeremy. “We’re also blessed to work with a clientele who by and large share and demonstrate that mindset and act as role models for us on a daily basis. It brings us so much joy to see local organizations such as PORCH continue to flourish. Supporting and partnering with amazing local organizations doing good will be a huge part of Fitness Together’s future.”
