Madi is a Chapel Hill native and longtime PORCH volunteer. This spring, she finished up her degree in biology and medical anthropology at UNC Chapel Hill and will be continuing her education at the University of Michigan this fall in their MPH program with a focus on Health Behavior and Health Equity.

When did you start volunteering with PORCH and how did you hear about us?

I started volunteering with PORCH when I was in middle school-so around 10 years ago! I heard about PORCH through school as my middle school was starting a “PORCH Club” and I was able to get involved through that.

What is your favorite part about volunteering with PORCH?

My favorite part about volunteering with PORCH is all of the people that I get to meet! The other volunteers are always so incredibly kind, and I love getting the chance to chat with participants and create an incredible sense of community.

Is there a role at PORCH that you’re an absolute pro at?

This is a tough one! I always enjoy getting to put together the “Take 5” table as I love organizing all of the goodies on the table. I think it is super fun and allows me to be a little creative.

How does volunteering in general fit into your life—is it something you do for fun, to build skills, to meet new people, etc?

I volunteer in my free time as I think it is really fun and I love to just interact with my community and get to learn about other people’s lives!
