September 2024: The Latest from PORCH
- As students return to school, they connect with social workers, who will then refer their family to PORCH as needed. We always experience a back-to-school surge. Can you help us serve more families by making a financial gift? Thank you!
- The Viviers family loves volunteering at PORCH – spending time together in a setting where there is no electronic media but instead lots of laughter, great music playing, and some exercise thrown into the mix. Want to get involved with PORCH? Reach out to sofia@porchcommunities.org.
- Food for Schools provides supplemental food – like protein and granola bars, cheese crackers, and other non-perishables – to students in Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools who are hungry and struggling to concentrate in the classroom. PORCH Chapel Hill-Carrboro provides each of the schools with $1,100 worth of snacks per school year. “It is a lifesaver for the kids because of lot of them don’t bring snacks – either they forget or they don’t have them,” says Frank Porter Graham Elementary school social worker Suzeth Gonzalez. “I love PORCH. They are super generous.” Food for Schools is made possible by sponsorships from local businesses and individuals. Learn more about Food for Schools. Or reach out to chc@porchcommunities.org for sponsorship information.
- August marked another record high month! A total of 667 families are enrolled in our Food for Families program – 2,549 individuals, including 1,460 children! Volunteers packed a total of 528 non-perishable bags that were loaded into our participants’ cars, along with a gallon of milk, 2 dozen eggs, and a beautiful box of fresh fruits and vegetables. Our Burmese, Karen, and Congolese refugee families received a bag of beautiful fresh produce from Transplanting Traditions. All families received a grocery gift card. Volunteers also delivered more than 69 bags of non-perishable items to nine of our Food For Pantries Partners! A BIG thank you to everyone who stepped up this month to sign up for extra shifts! A special thanks to the Chapel Hill High School football team and our community partner, Wegmans.
