June 2022 Food for Thought

Food for Thought

Advocacy postcards through our Food for Thought program are back! Starting with the PORCH food sort on Monday, June 20, we will have sample messages to legislators, blank postcards, and stamps waiting and ready to go at Extraordinary Ventures. If you are coming to the sort to volunteer or bring donated food, please feel welcome to join as you can (this time or in the future). There will be a table set up with postcards and someone on hand to walk you through postcard writing if you’re new to it – it’s super easy! The time commitment is less than 5 minutes for a postcard. Let our legislators know that we are paying attention and that we insist they enact policies that prioritize our most vulnerable neighbors.

Want to write a postcard from home? Go for it! Our sample messaging for this month is below. (Note: If you would rather email them or call your elected officials, feel free! We encourage you to reach out in whatever way is most comfortable.)

Once you have contacted your elected officials, we ask that you fill out this brief form to let us know that you have done so. It will only take a minute. This helps us to measure our impact! Thank you!

  1. Medicaid Expansion
    Dear Representative [NAME],
At PORCH, a nonprofit supporting food security in Chapel Hill and Carrboro, we know our
families are forced to choose between buying food and paying medical bills. You can help our struggling neighbors live, work, and raise their families without having to make this difficult choice. Access to affordable and high-quality health care should be a right, not a privilege. Please expand Medicaid in North Carolina.

    Sincerely,
    [NAME]

Address postcards to: Your NC House Rep (find their contact info), House Speaker Tim Moore, and House Speaker Pro Tem Sarah Stevens.

  1. Summer Feeding Programs
    Dear Senator/Representative [NAME],
At PORCH, a nonprofit supporting food security in Chapel Hill and Carrboro, we know our
families struggle to feed their children when school breakfasts and lunches aren’t available.
Please use your voice and your vote to ensure food security for our nation’s children, especially in the summer season. We need funding for summer feeding programs to protect our most vulnerable!

    Sincerely,
    [NAME]

Address postcards to: Senator Richard Burr, Senator Thom Tillis, and your U.S. House Rep. (Find your U.S. House Rep and their contact information.)
